PRACTICE

Slow exhale breathing

Breathe out for longer than you breathe in to help the body settle.

HOW TO PRACTICE

  1. Sit or lie down comfortably and let your shoulders drop.
  2. Breathe in gently through your nose for a count of 4.
  3. Breathe out slowly through your mouth or nose for a count of 6, as if blowing through a straw.
  4. Repeat for 8 to 10 breaths, keeping each out-breath a little longer and softer than the in-breath.
Considerations

A quick way to calm the nervous system before sleep or during stress. Stop if you feel dizzy or lightheaded.
